Captive Universe
Version 3.90
The last few days have been very hectic, ending with your imprisonment. The tribal elders chose you to be the next sacrifice, and your life will end at dawn tomorrow. You are not surprised that you were chosen, since you have been unpopular with the priests ever since you were a boy, always asking questions like why the god Tezchatlix could not even protect the priests from the scorpions, let alone the villagers. Last year had been a year of plenty, and many of the villagers had privately expected that it would be a dry year this year. The high priest Cittlalat had almost been looking for an excuse to punish you, and a sacrifice to bring rain to the village was always popular.
You are twenty four years old,and you have lived in the valley all your life. You didn't really have much choice, as there is no way out of it. Some time in the past, the gods thought fit to drop a huge boulder in the only exit, blocking it completely. The legend states that it will be removed again in five hundred years, when the punishment is over. The priests do not say how much time is left, and it doesn't matter. It will not happen in your lifetime.
The priests. They are a as good a group of uninquiring, traditional, vicious old men as one could hope to find in any society. When you were younger you were required to learn at the temple one day in three for two years, as all boys had to. The lucky ones were taken on as apprentice priests, and never had to lift a load again in there lives. You were easily the most intelligent in your class, having taught yourself to read without the priests knowing. But you asked far too many questions that no one had answers to, and because of this you are here.
You clench your fists. Well, you're not going to sit here and take it. The gods may judge you as they will, but the priests won't keep you here forever. You look around your cell, carefully searching for a way out...
Inside your cell
Your cell is fairly well lit, from a torch just outside. The floor is made of large stone flagstones, and the cell door is made of large bars, a mixture of steel and copper. It's to the north, by the way. You know about these things from the village smith, one of the few people you got on well with. The walls are bricked fairly well, the cells were obviously made by someone who wasn't going to do anything by halves.
