The X-Files: A New Beginning
The manila file slams down on your desk with a dull thump. Stopping your typing for an instant, you glance at the file. Then slowly, your gaze travels upwards. Your partner smiles down at you coyly. "Should I repeat myself, Agent Mulder?" "What's this," you ask, leaning back casually in your chair. "Consider it an early Christmas present." You grin and shake your head. "After two years, they're not going to grant any of my requests." Ruth sits down across from you. "Maybe badgering the brass upstairs so long knocked something into them," she says teasingly. Attempting to maintain your cool exterior, you reach for the folder. Your hand trembles slightly and gives you away. If Ruth notices, she doesn't say anything, intent on seeing your reaction to what is inside. Within the folder, you find a memo. Listed below the formal heading of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it reads:
December 24, 2027
Agent Mulder:
In light of your most recent request, it has been decided that you should be granted access to the X-Files. The division of crimes itself will be reopened. You will be transferred to that division effective immediately. Your new office will be in level B. As the Bureau searches for a new Division Head, you will temporarily remain under the supervision of your current A.D.
End Memo
You flip the note over, surprised to see something scrawled on the back.
P4 (11)
Now looming over your shoulder, Ruth asks, "What do you think it means?" The answer comes to you. "It's an arrangement for a meeting . . . in the parking garage... P4" You look up at her and she looks down at you intently. "Are you going to go?"
"This is the first chance I've actually been given to investigate what my parents did. Of course I'm going. " "Then I'm coming with you." You smile, touched by her overprotective nature for you. "Ruth, I'm sure this was meant for me alone. I appreciate the thought, but don't worry about me. Besides, it's Christmas Eve and you have a plane to catch." Her glare settles on you and you suddenly feel chilled. Surprisingly, she relents, "Alright, but don't do anything stupid. Call and leave me know how it goes. Have a nice Christmas, and check the drawer, I left something in there you should see." Peaking your eyebrows, you give her a quizzical look. "Okay, you too." Ruth grabs her coat and flashes you a warm smile before she leaves.
Holidays tend to be bad times. They always bring back the painful past.
You were seven the last time you saw your mother, and you've never even met your father. One night, you fell asleep in your bed and woke up the next morning in another, in a house you never knew, with people you had never met. They claimed that they were your foster parents and told you beautiful lies. You never saw your mother again, but over time, the new people became your family. You graduated high school at the top of your class and entered Oxford the way your mother told you your father once did. Always a brilliant student, you studied psychology and criminology, excelling in both. You applied to the FBI straight out of college and entered the Academy back in Quantico. There, you were also first in your class, discovering only later that your father had done the same. Since then, you've been a profiler in D.C. with the violent crimes section, occasionally assigned cases with Agent Ruth Savoy. And until now, your requests to reopen your father's work have been denied, but that all changed tonight. Merry Christmas.
